We recently talked about several shows we attend each year as a way to demonstrate our driving simulator to our clients (and prospective clients). Well, in about 10 days we’ll roll into the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, UT, for the 2018 American Occupational Therapists Association (AOTA) Conference and Exposition. It’s our first show of the year and we can’t wait!
Over the years AOTA has done an especially good job of increasing awareness around the role that occupational therapists play in senior-safe mobility. They’ve also done a great job of emphasizing the role of driving to help keep elderly people mobile.
As the job of assessing a person’s ability to drive falls more and more to occupational therapists, and organizations like AOTA and ADED (The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists) are working hard to get therapists ready for that task. They help to educate occupational therapists and promote the tools and techniques that allow therapists to get ready for this huge undertaking. In fact, a large area of the AOTA convention hall is dedicated to driving applications for just this reason.
AOTA recently published a book called Driving Simulation for Assessment, Intervention, and Training – a Guide for Occupational Therapy and Health Care Professionals. It was edited by the esteemed chair of the University of Florida’s Occupational Therapy Department, Sherrilene Classen, and, not to toot our own horn (toot, toot!), but a member of our staff contributed a few articles to the publication. Also, there are numerous current and former STISIM Drive clients in the list of authors.
Aside from the driving portion of the yearly expo, the AOTA conference is where many aspiring occupational therapists get the chance to present their collegiate work. Plus there are seminars and papers presented on the latest technologies and research being done in the field. Finally, the exposition hall is chock full of specialized vendors offering all kinds of therapeutic devices and solutions.
We’re proud to be a part of the AOTA conference every year, and we look forward to showing off our driving simulator console to anyone interested in taking a look. So stop by, say hello, and go for a drive! We’ll be at booth #2007.
Hope to see you there!
