In previous blog posts, we talked about the different trade shows and conferences that the STISIM Drive team planned to and subsequently attended. One of the most important places where we exhibit our driving simulator technology at is the American Occupational Therapist Association (AOTA) conference. In roughly two weeks from now we will be descending on the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in beautiful New Orleans for the 2019 (and 102nd) AOTA Conference and Exposition.
Over the years, AOTA has focused a lot of attention on increasing awareness of occupational therapy’s role in senior safe mobility, even emphasizing the role of driving to help keep elderly people mobile. More and more the job of assessing a person’s ability to drive is falling on occupation therapists. That’s where organizations like AOTA and ADED (The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists) come in, working hard to educate therapists and promote the tools and techniques that allow them to be aptly prepared for the task.
The AOTA conference is THE place to be to learn the latest and greatest in the area of driving assessment. There’s always a space in the convention hall dedicated to driving applications, thousands of aspiring therapists get the chance to present their collegiate work, there are seminars and papers presenting the latest technologies and research being done, and the exhibition hall is chock full of vendors hawking therapeutic devices and solutions.
Attendees will also have the chance to get their hands on the AOTA-published Driving Simulation for Assessment, Intervention, and Training – A Guide for Occupational Therapy and Health Care Professionals, edited by the esteemed chair of the University of Florida’s Occupational Therapy Department, Sherrilene Classen. This is a must-read for anyone in the occupational therapy field who also plans to assess driving ability (and, not to brag, but if you happen to get a copy you might notice that one of our staff contributed to a few chapters, and there are numerous current and former STISIM Drive clients in the list of authors).
We’ll be there proudly showing off our driving simulator console at booth #631, so if you will be attending, stop by, say hello, and go for a drive. We hope to see you there!
